The Friends of African American Studies Department is designed to:

Offer enriching educational programs and activities focusing on the study of African-American history, popular culture, public policy and minority communities, and the impact of technological developments on African-American communities.

Promote greater awareness and understanding of the impact of African-American scholars, artists, entrepreneurs, activists, and professionals on American society and the world at large.

Share the intellectual resources of AASD with various constituencies including: public and private school students and teachers, university students and alumni.

Generate important financial support for the ongoing research and programmatic activities in the African American Studies Program, included among these are: the John and Ida B. Slaughter Endowment in Science, Technology and the Black Community, which sponsors an annual lecture series and an academic scholarship; the Bachelors/Masters Program in Public Policy, which awards two scholarships to talented undergraduates; and the Multicultural Teacher Training Project, designed for teachers and administrators.
