Johanna Birnir and Nil Satana were awarded a grant in the amount of $206,220 funded by DHS for their project “One God For All? Fundamentalism and Group Radicalization.

Patrick Wohlfarth won the 2011 Best Paper by an Emerging Scholar Award from the Midwest Political Science Association for his paper: "Political Context and Regulatory Decision Making: The Impact of Public Opinion on Decentralized Policy Enforcement" (with Christopher Ellis, Bucknell University).

Vladimir Tismaneanu received Romania's National Order "For Merit" at the rank of High Offcer, by decree of President Traian Basescu, on the occasion of 60th birthday anniversary, for remarkable contributions to democratization in Romania.

Frances Lee’s book, Beyond Ideology, was selected for the D.B. Hardeman Prize, which is given annually by the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library for the best book focusing on the U.S. Congress, from the fields of biography, history, journalism, or political science.

Kris Miller's book, Constituency Representation in Congress: The View from Capitol Hill, received the APSA Rosenthal Award this year.

Virginia Haufler presented her paper titled "Convergence and Divergence in Transnational Governance Initiatives: Exploring Corruption, Conflict and the Management of Natural Resources," at the Research Workshop on Transnational Governance Interactions at the European University Institute May 2011.

Heather Creek and Stephen Yoder are the 2011 recipients of the Best Graduate Student Paper award from the State Politics section of the APSA for "With a Little Help from Our Feds: Understanding State/Federal Cooperation on Immigration Enforcement."

Benjamin Appel and Alyssa Prorok received the Don C. Piper Award for their paper entitled "Not Too Distant: Understanding How Opportunity and Grievance Jointly Determine the Onset of Civil War."

Jim Curry received the Roger Davidson Award for his paper entitled "Information and Majority Leadership Power in the House of Representatives."

GVPT undergraduate students Zachary Sivo and Paige Pennington have been awarded the Emerging Scholar Award for the Fall 2011 semester. They will be working on research projects at CAPC under the mentorship of CAPC faculty Paul Herrnson and Mike Hanmer.

GVPT alumnus Faraz Zubairi delivered the commencement speech, "Soul to Goal," at the UMD BSOS Graduation ceremony on May 20, 2011.

Jacqueline Crowell and Chineme Ezekwenna won the Mary Elizabeth Roby Scholarship.

Robert Rosenthal and Chineme Ezekwenna won the Brian M. Gardner Public Service Award.

Graduating Major Jenna Blumenthal has accepted an offer to attend a graduate program (in Development Practice) at Emory University. Fellow graduate Matthew Mora has accepted an offer to attend law school at the UM School of Law.
