Lecture on Claudia DeMonte: Valerie Cassel Oliver, Associate Curator, Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston

Claudia DeMonte was born in Astoria, NY. She received her BA in Art from the College of Notre Dame of Maryland, Baltimore, and her MFA in Painting from The Catholic University of America, Washington, DC. She taught Painting and Art Theory at the University of Maryland from 1972 until 2004 when was named Distinguished Scholar Teacher and Professor Emerita. She has had over sixty solo exhibitions and hundreds of group exhibitions nationally and internationally, including exhibitions at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Tucson Museum of Art, and the Gerduberg Cultural Center, Reykjavik, Iceland. Her work is in numerous permanent collections including the Museum of Modern Art, the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Queens Museum of Art, Boca Raton Museum of Art, and here at the University of Maryland. DeMonte's work is also in many corporate collections, including Exxon, Hyatt Regency Hotels, the Twentieth Century Fund, and Citibank. She has completed large scale public commissions for Prudential Life Insurance, the NYC School Construction Authority, and the Brooklyn Public Library System.
