Darrell J. Gaskin is Associate Professor of Health of Economics at the University of Maryland at College Park in the African American Studies Department. His primary research interests are safety net hospitals, access to healthcare for minority, low-income, uninsured, and other vulnerable populations, and healthcare disparities. His primary aim is to promote policies and practices that improve access to care for the poor and other vulnerable populations, and that eliminate disparities in healthcare. His other research interests include the studying effects of managed care, other market forces and public policy on hospital behavior, mental health economics and the treatment decisions of terminally ill patients.

Dr. Gaskin is a nationally recognized expert on the hospital safety net. He was awarded the Academy Health 2002 Article-of-the-Year Award for his Health Services Research article entitled, "Are Urban Safety-Net Hospitals Losing Low-Risk Medicaid Maternity Patients?" Dr. Gaskin has written extensively on safety net hospitals, and access to care for minority and low income patients. He has published several articles evaluating access to care for low income children with special health care needs in the District of Columbia. He is currently working on a project on disparities in the quality of hospital care. He has studied disparities in prescription drug spending among Medicare beneficiaries.

Prior to coming to the University of Maryland, Dr. Gaskin served on the faculty of The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in the Department of Health Policy and Management as an Associate Professor and the Deputy Director of the Hopkins Center for Health Disparities Solutions. Also, he served as a Research Associate Professor in the Georgetown University Institute for Health Care Research and Policy. He earned his Ph.D. in health economics at The Johns Hopkins University, a MS degree in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a BA degree in economics from Brandeis University. Dr. Gaskin was a member of the Institute of Medicine Committee on the Future of Emergency Care in the U.S. Health System. Also, he serves on the Boards of Directors of the Maryland Health Insurance Plan and the Maryland Citizen's Health Initiative.
