How many students do you
accept each year ? Can you provide some statistics on class diversity
?
We admit an average of three to five Ph.D. candidates and 10-12 MAA candidates each
year. In recent years the total number of students enrolled in
the
program averages around 35. Most ethnic minorities, as well as
students from outside the USA, are represented. There are about
three times
as many women as men.
What are the "areas
of concentration" ?
In the Spring of 2004 the faculty agreed to shift
the structure of the gradiate program from one of dedicated tracks to
one of declared areas of concentration. Most faculty members maintain
interests that intersect these three areas of concentration. In
keeping with the synthetic and holistic nature of anthropological
inquiry, the ways in which these areas overlap and relate to each
other is as interesting and functionally important as is their particular
character.

Must I have an undergraduate
degree in anthropology in order to be accepted into your graduate
program ?
While the traditional applicant has taken a major
in anthropology, the faculty have made exceptions in the past if
they felt they could adequately train somebody in their field of
interest. A majority of students arrive directly from undergraduate
studies with a solid background in anthropology, but some are already
professional anthropologists and others come from a variety of disciplinary
backgrounds.
In any case, applicants should be aware that the
program assumes a knowledge of the discipline prior to beginning
coursework.
What are the average GRE
score and the average undergraduate GPA ?
Our incoming students usually have a combined score
of at least 1100 in the Verbal and Quantitative sections of the
GRE and a GPA of 3.5. We are becoming more competitive with regard
to quantitative measures. Calculating over the last five years,
the average combined GRE is 1160 and the average GPA 3.42. Calculating
just the last three years, the average combined GRE is 1210 and
the average GPA 3.5.
How important are the GRE
scores ?
Standardized test scores are important, not only
for admission but especially for consideration of fellowships, grants,
and financial aid. We suggest that you take the time to prepare
for the exams and, if you are not satisfied with your results, perhaps
take them more than once.
The tests, however, make up only one part of a comprehensive
review process that includes your statements of purpose and experience,
your letters of recommendation, and your complete academic record.
You must tell the testing service to send your scores
to the University of Maryland. Our identification number is :

How many essays are required
for the admissions packet ?
We require two written essays : A statement of
purpose and a statement of experience. (The electronic application
may combine these two topics into a single essay.) You are welcome
to include a writing sample if you believe it will illuminate an
important
element
of
your background or skill-set. The electronic supplemental form
provides a way to submit your writing sample electronically.
I'm confused - Which materials
should I send to the Graduate School and which to the Department
of Anthropology ?
You do not need to send materials to the department
unless they are unusual items that you feel are necessary for your
file. Examples include a video tape, CD-ROM, or lengthy paper.
When you fill out the electronic application all of your information
is
automatically
entered into
the Graduate
School
system, and a copy of your information is sent to the department.
This includes the essays that we expect to read. One copy
of your undergraduate transcripts must be mailed to the Enrollment
Services Office (ESO). Your letters of recommendation can be filled
out electronically online, or they can be sent by post. If they
are sent by post they should go to ESO. Your GRE scores are automatically
entered into the university system,
provided
you
have directed
Educational
Testing
Services
to send
them to us. If you have
questions, or if you have non-document materials to include in
your file, please contact us.

I am living overseas. Do
I have a different application deadline to meet ?
No. January 5 is the only application deadline
for the MAA program. Applications received after January 5 will
be considered in the next year's admissions cycle.
When can I expect to know
if I have been admitted ? Do you have an early decision option ?
We usually finalize decisions by early March. We
do not have an early decision option.
Will I be able to find
a job ?
Nothing is guaranteed, of course. We do, however,
have an excellent record of using this degree in work placements.
Our graduates work in international and national organizations,
for a variety of sectors, and in a multiplicity of areas of application.
Some MAA students go on to study for a Ph.D. either here or at another institution.
