UNDERGRADUATE ADVISING

GENERAL INFORMATION

ADVISING 101

GENERAL INFORMATION

THE PURPOSE OF ADVISING

Advising is a very important resource to have during your academic career as it is designed for the student. Navigating the UMCP campus can be a large task. Advising helps you access ways to make the most out of your undergraduate experience, including those resources and opportunities on campus that are of benefit to your individual interests. Your advisor is here to answer questions, or to direct you to where the answers can be found.

Though the Department of Anthropology does not maintain a policy of mandatory advising for every major, you should see your advisor at least once a semester for a variety of reasons, including but not limited to:

Students entering their final semester will need to have an official senior audit done by the Undergraduate Advisor and approved by the student’s faculty advisor in order to be academically cleared for graduation.

The Undergraduate Advisor is:

Ms. Katherine Johnson
1111 Woods Hall
Phone: 301.405.1436
Fax: 301.314.8305
E-mail: KJJOHNSON@anth.umd.edu

The Director of Undergraduate Studies oversees the undergraduate program and is available throughout the year to meet with students.

The Director of Undergraduate Studies is:

Dr. Paul Shackel
1111 Woods Hall
Phone: 301.405.1422
Fax: 301.314.8305
E-mail: pshackel@anth.umd.edu

The Director of the Departmental Honors Program is available to provide advice related to Anthropology Departmental Honors and is also responsible for the department’s capstone course sequence.

The Director of Departmental Honors Program:

Dr. William Stuart
0106 Woods Hall
Phone: 301.405.1435
Fax: 310.314.8305
E-mail: wstuart@anth.umd.edu

All anthropology faculty are available to serve as faculty advisors. Students are encouraged to meet regularly with their faculty advisor and are required to have the approval of a faculty advisor for focus area and supporting course work selection.

WALK-IN ADVISING

The Undergraduate Advisor is available to help students succeed. To fully benefit from an advising appointment, students should bring a copy of their unofficial transcript and any other pertinent information.

The Department of Anthropology is open from 8:00am to 4:30pm Monday – Friday. Every semester, the Undergraduate Advisor posts walk-in hours on the front door of the department. During these times, students are free to come in and speak with the Undergraduate Advisor about any topic. Students are seen during walk-in hours on a first come first serve basis, and meetings last up to 15 minutes.

Students may also schedule an appointment to see the Undergraduate Advisor at times outside of the semester walk-in hours.  Students are encouraged to make an appointment for a half or whole hour for more in-depth issues.

SPRING 2008 WALK-IN ADVISING HOURS:

Tuesday 1:00-4:00pm

Wednesday 9:00am- 12:00pm
