Systematic archaeological excavations have taken place at Petersburg
National Battlefield since the 1970s. These archaeological investigations
aid the National Park Service in interpreting the battlefield, as well
manage all of the
historic, cultural, and natural resources located on the battlefield.
These projects have been undertaken by the
National Park Service and their various contractors. Sites ranging
from prehistoric periods through the Siege of
Petersburg have been excavated. Both domestic and military sites
are present on the battlefield and several of both
types have been studied.
