The Genomic Models
Research Group is a
collection of undergraduate and graduate biological anthropology
students working under Dr. Fatimah Jackson through the Department of
Anthropology. We are researching hypertension and stroke in
the
Carolina Coast region and exploring its possible ancestral connection
to West Central Africa, and simultaneously exploring
incidence of
breast cancer in the Chesapeake Bay Region and its possible ancestral
connections to the Bight of Bonny Region of West Africa. Our goal is to layer geographic and health histories with genetic histories to aide in the study of genetic variation in our region as it relates to breast cancer and hypertension. On Maryland Day, 2009 we are collecting cheek cell samples and surveying participants about their geographic and health histories. All information is collected anonymously. Each participant will then be given a random number that corresponds with the status of their sample in the table below.
