University Ranks 10th in the Country in the Social Sciences
A new method for measuring doctoral programs has ranked the University of Maryland 10th overall in the country in the social sciences. Specific programs in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences that ranked very high include criminology at #1, cognitive science at #5, political science at #7 and geography at #9.
Called the Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index, this ranking system examines the number of books and journal articles published by each programs’ faculty, as well as journal citations, awards, honors, and grants received. Findings were based on data from 2005, including scholarly output at 7,294 doctoral programs from 177,816 faculty members in 104 disciplines at 354 colleges and universities.
In addition, the University of Maryland, College Park was ranked 31st overall among research universities and 11th among publicly funded universities.
