E-News Fall 2002 Welcome to E-News from BSOS, the College of Behavioral and Social
Sciences' electronic newsletter. Our plan is to deliver E-News from BSOS in
Fall and Spring. With delivery of our printed newsletter, World View, in winter
and summer, we look forward to sharing good news about the College of Behavioral
and Social Sciences with you at least four times a year. E-News from BSOS
is designed so you can take a quick look at headlines and read more about
only those items that interest you. We hope you enjoy it! Kofi Annan, Secretary-General of the United Nations, will deliver the fifth annual Sadat Lecture for Peace on Wednesday, November 13. Former U.S. Senator Harris Wofford will deliver the fall 2002 civil society lecture on Monday, October 7, and be appointed Professor of Practice. The Maryland Population Research Center (formerly the Center on Population, Gender and Social Inequality) has been designated one of only 15 national population research centers by the National Institute for Child Health and Human Development. CIVICUS living-learning program has been chosen to participate in the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching's Political Engagement Project. Brian Wiersema, of the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice and the Maryland Population Research Center, was awarded a $1.3 million grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to establish a comprehensive statewide violent death reporting system located within the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. The Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences' Language-Learning Early Advantage Program (LEAP), which prepares speech- and language-delayed preschoolers for successful transition to mainstream elementary school classes, is one of six preschool reading/literacy programs identified as a model by the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Elementary and Secondary Education. Criminology professor Ray Paternoster has been selected to be
the next editor of "Criminology."
Sociologist Mady Segal has won the Robin
Williams Award for a Career of Distinguished Contribution to Research,
Teaching and Service from the American Sociological Association. The College of Behavioral and Social Sciences welcomes seven
new faculty. The Department of Geography's Fall 2002 Distinguished Visitors Series will feature Dr. Roger Downs from Penn State on October 10 and Dr. Michael Goodchild from the University of California, Santa Barbara on October 24. The Department of Government and Politics and the Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences plan alumni events. The University welcomes its brightest freshman
class ever. Student Joseph
Andrew Canter, government and politics major, was appointed by Governor
Glendening to the University System of Maryland's Board of Regents. William "Brit" Kirwan returns to Maryland as chancellor
