The Center for Substance Abuse Research was recently awarded a $2.8 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to conduct the "College Life Study." The study will measure the impact of health-related behaviors on the lives of first-time freshmen aged 18 or 19. www.cesar.umd.edu/ Sociology professors Sonalde Desai and Reeve Vanneman were recently
awarded $1.9 million from the National Institutes of Health to study maternal
and child health in India. Brian Wiersema, of the Department of Criminology and Criminal
Justice and the Maryland Population Research Center, was awarded a $1.3 million
grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to establish a comprehensive
statewide violent death reporting system located within the Maryland Department
of Health and Mental Hygiene. Psychology professor Thomas Nelson was recently awarded $1 million
from the Cognition and Student Learning Research Grant Program of the Federal
Office of Education. He will study computer-assisted instruction for learning
and long-term retention of second-language vocabulary, based on recent cognitive
and metacognitive findings. Economics professor Judith Hellerstein was recently awarded
$1 million from the National Institutes of Health to study the economics of
residential and workplace segregation. Psychology professor Carl Lejeuz was recently awarded $900,000
from the National Institute on Drug Abuse to study why cigarette smokers relapse

Psychology professor Charles E. Sternheim joined the dean's
office as acting senior associate Erve Chambers is the new chair of the Department of Anthropology. Lynn Bolles is acting chair of the Department of African American

Shibley Telhami, the Anwar Sadat Chair for Peace and Development, was recently appointed to the Advisory Group on Public Diplomacy in the Arab and Muslim World. University Professor. Government and politics professor Wayne McIntosh was named Faculty
Mentor of the Year. Economics professor Wallace Oates won the National Tax Association's
Holland Medal for distinguished lifetime contributions to the study and practice

was recently elected a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement
of Science. Sociology professor Mady Segal won the American Sociological
Association's Robin Williams Award for a Career of Distinguished Contributions
to Research, Teaching and Service. Sociology professor Meyer Kestnbaum was elected chair of the
American Sociological Association's Section on Peace, War and Social Conflict. Confronting Consumption, a book by government and politics professor
Ken Conca, is the winner of the International Studies Association's Harold
and Margaret Sprout Award, given
CIVICUS student Allison Bigelow was awarded the 2003 University
Medal. Rebecca Ariel Hoffberg, a government and politics major, was chosen to give the student speech at the university commencement last May. www.bsos.umd.edu/dean/hoffberg.html BSOS student Gregory Tindale was elected student liaison to the College Park City Council. He will serve a one-year term. As student liaison, Tindale will be expected to attend council work sessions and meetings. He will not be able to vote.
The Center for Comparative and Evolutionary Biology of Hearing, co-directed by psychology professor Bob Dooling and biology professor Art Popper, held the 1st International Conference on Acoustic Communication by Animals on campus in August.
