This summer, the Department of Anthropology’s Center for Heritage Resource Studies will offer its first New Philadelphia (Illinois) Field School, sponsored by the National Science Foundation’s Research Experiences for Undergraduates Program. www.heritage.umd.edu The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has awarded the Center for Substance Abuse Research (CESAR) a grant worth nearly $100,000 to study what impact treatment has on people who have been charged with driving while impaired (DWI). www.cesar.umd.edu Faculty in the Department of Geography began work this semester on

for Institutional Reform and the Informal Sector (IRIS), is the recipient
of the Distinguished International Service Award, presented by the university’s

to the development of international programs at the university. “Stolen Dreams: The Reality of Ecstasy,”a 15-minute video produced by University Marketing for the Center for Substance Abuse Research (CESAR), is the winner of a 2003 Telly Award. The Annie E. Casey Foundation will publish “An Asset-Based Community-Building Paradigm for Twenty-First Century Development” by Gar Alperovitz, the Lionel R. Bauman Professor of Political Economy. will publish the volume "Communism, Postcommunism, Democracy: Ion
Iliescu in Dialogue with Vladimir Tismaneanu." Professor Tismaneanu

on Conservatism, Society, and Politics at a conference sponsored by
the ruling party of Turkey. The conference is in Istanbul and attended
by the Turkish Prime Minister. Sociology professor John Iceland was the keynote speaker at a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services conference on "Connecting the Community: Learning from the Past – Informing the Future: 21st Century Solutions for Addressing Poverty." Kirwan, chancellor of the University System of Maryland and former president of the University of Maryland College Park, delivered the Baha’i’ Chair for World Peace Tenth Annual Lecture on Wednesday, April 14th. and former U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, delivered the annual
Sadat Lecture. The lecture was held in the Dekelboum Concert Hall of

spoke on “The Journey to Peace: Finding Ourselves in the Other,”
