Sharon Harley, interim chair of the African American Studies Department, has had her Ford Foundation-funded research seminar, "The Meanings and Representations of Work in the Lives of Women of Color," renewed.

This summer, the Department of Anthropology’s Center for Heritage Resource Studies will offer its first New Philadelphia (Illinois) Field School, sponsored by the National Science Foundation’s Research Experiences for Undergraduates Program. www.heritage.umd.edu

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has awarded the Center for Substance Abuse Research (CESAR) a grant worth nearly $100,000 to study what impact treatment has on people who have been charged with driving while impaired (DWI). www.cesar.umd.edu

Charles A. Cadwell, director and principal investigator of the Center for Institutional Reform and the Informal Sector (IRIS), is the recipient of the Distinguished International Service Award, presented by the university’s Office of International Programs to recognize significant contributions to the development of international programs at the university.

“Stolen Dreams: The Reality of Ecstasy,”a 15-minute video produced by University Marketing for the Center for Substance Abuse Research (CESAR), is the winner of a 2003 Telly Award. Jonathan Wilkenfeld, director of the Center for International Development and Conflict Management in the Department of Government and Politics, is the recipient of the Distinguished Scholar Award from the Foreign Policy Analysis Section of the International Studies Association. The Annie E. Casey Foundation will publish “An Asset-Based Community-Building Paradigm for Twenty-First Century Development” by Gar Alperovitz, the Lionel R. Bauman Professor of Political Economy. Sociology professor David Segal recently received the Charles H. Coates commemorative award for significant contributions to military sociology and a citation from the Carmel (Israel) Institute for Social Studies for contributions to their research programs.

The Scientific and Encyclopedic Publishing House in Bucharest, Romania will publish the volume "Communism, Postcommunism, Democracy: Ion Iliescu in Dialogue with Vladimir Tismaneanu." Guest Lectures

Government and politics professor Fred Alford will spoke about Emmanual Levinas at a conference in London devoted to the author’s work. Levinas is the topic of Alford’s most recently published book. www.bsos.umd.edu/gvpt/alford

Government and politics professor Charles Butterworth presented a paper on Conservatism, Society, and Politics at a conference sponsored by the ruling party of Turkey. The conference is in Istanbul and attended by the Turkish Prime Minister.

Sociology professor John Iceland was the keynote speaker at a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services conference on "Connecting the Community: Learning from the Past – Informing the Future: 21st Century Solutions for Addressing Poverty." On Wednesday, March 17th, Mary Robinson, former president of Ireland and former U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, delivered the annual Sadat Lecture.
