MAJOR GRANTS/CONTRACTS

Center for Institutional Reform in the Informal Sector (IRIS)
IRIS won a $6.9 million grant from USAID for the "Ecuador Business Environment Improvement and Private Sector Leadership Project."

Department of Government and Politics
Professor Wayne McIntosh was awarded a $749,996 grant from the National Science Foundation to study "A Computational Approach to Understanding the Dynamics of the Judicial System.”

Department of Geography
Robert Sohlberg, a faculty research assistant, was awarded $525,000 from NASA-Goddard for a grant titled “An Interoperable Sensor Architecture to Facilitate SensorWebs in Pursuit of Global Earth System of Systems.”

 

Department of Sociology
Professor Annette Lareau was awarded $500,000 from the Spencer Foundation for "Choosing Homes, Choosing Schools," a study of intergenerational transmission of advantage from grandparents to parents to children.

Public Safety Training & Technical Assistance Program (PSTTAP)
PSTTAP has been awarded $377,200 from the U.S. Department of State to provide antiterrorism seminars, protective intelligence workshops and VIP protection management courses.

 

RANKINGS

Maryland is ranked 18th in the world and 10th in the country in the social sciences.

 

AWARDS/HONORS

Department of Psychology
Distinguished University Professor of Social Psychology Arie Kruglanski won the Regents’ Faculty Award in Research, given for "distinguished performance."

 

 

SERVICE

Department of Geography
Department chair John Townshend has been appointed a member of the National Center for Atmospheric Research's (NCAR) Advisory Council. NCAR is a National Science Foundation federally funded research and development center.

Professor Michael Kearney has been appointed a member of the National Water Quality Monitoring Council (NWQMC), part of the Advisory Committee on Water Information, a presidential level advisory committee.

Professor Chris Justice has been appointed vice-chair of the Committee on Strategic Advice on the U.S. Climate Change Science Program.

Professor Bill Evans has been appointed editor-in-chief of the Journal of Human Resources.
