Peter Coughlin, Associate Professor, received
his Ph.D. in Economics from the State University of New York at Albany
in 1976. Prior to becoming a member of the Maryland faculty in 1982, he
was a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard, Stanford, Oxford and Carnegie Mellon
Universities. The Association for Public Policy and Management has given
him its James L. Barr award in Public Economics. He has also been a Fellow
at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford.
His research interests are in the areas of social choice, voting theory
and applied game theory. Publications include: "Balanced Budget Redistribution
as the Outcome of Political Competition: A Comment, Public Choice,
1991; "Pure Strategy Equilibria in a Class of Systems Defense Games,
International Journal of Game Theory, 1992; Probabilistic Voting
Theory, Cambridge University Press, 1992.
