Professor Mahlon Straszheim received his Ph.D. in economics from Harvard
University in 1966. He was appointed Assistant Professor in the Department of
Economics at Harvard 1966-71 and joined Maryland’s faculty in 1971. He served
as chair of the Department from 1988-2005. His research interests are urban
economics, transportation economics, local labor markets, and regional models of
the State of Maryland and its sub-regions. He served as advisor to Maryland
Governors Schaefer and Glendening from 1992-1998, and has provided quarterly
economic forecasts of the Maryland economy to the Comptroller since 1992.
He has frequently appeared before committees of the Maryland General
Assembly as well as other public and private sector groups, addressing
topics on the State economy, tax revenues and tax policy, and economic
development policy. He teaches topics in applied microeconomics and
U.S. economic policy, and a seminar in the University Honors program and in
the Department’s principles sequence.
