General Information on Email

The Economics Department has its own email server, which runs Novell's GroupWise email server software. Email can be accessed via a GroupWise client or via the web by linking to http://econ.bsos.umd.edu. Additionally the email server can be accessed via IMAP compliant email clients. All faculty, staff and graduate students are assigned an email account upon joining the Department by the Windows/Novell network administrator.

The official domain name for the Economics Department server is @econ.bsos.umd.edu but accepts emails to both @econ.bsos.umd.edu and @econ.umd.edu

The GroupWise email server can be accessed from any computer anywhere via one of the above described methods, given the computer is connected to the Internet. In addition to email, GroupWise also provides the functionality of a personal information manager, including calendar functionality. 

The University also maintains a mail server for all of its students and employees. This server imposes more restrictions on users, and does not provide calendar functionality. For more details see mail.umd.edu Information.

All faculty, staff and undergraduate and graduate students can also apply for an email account on the Universities  WAM/GLUE network. Here is chart comparing basic features of the Economics Department's Groupwise email with those of a WAM/GLUE network email.
