Information on How to Use the Scanner and CD-Writer

The Economics Department has a scanner workstation with high-end HP scanner and automatic feeder. The equipment is located in the main office. Users can scan documents and import their content into a computer file using OCR software. Users can also scan photos and can edit them with installed photo editing software. The workstation also has PDF writer so that you can convert scanned images or text into PDF files. The workstation also has a CDRW (CD Read Write) drive that can be used in case your computer does not provide that functionality. Instructions on how to use the scanner and how to create CDs are posted at the workstation desk. Step by step instructions are also given below. If you have any question, call San Sampattavanija at x54534 or e-mail: sampatta@econ.umd.edu.

Duplicating a CD

To duplicate a CD follow the subsequent steps:

  • Click: "Start", "Programs", "Roxio Easy CD Creator 5", "Applications", and "CD Copier".
  • Insert the original CD you would like to duplicate into the CDRW drive.
  • If you want to create more than one copy, click the "Advance" tab and specify how many copies you would like to make in the "Number of Copies" box.

  • The computer will read the data from the original CD and eject the original CD after it has finished reading the CD. REMOVE the original CD from the CDRW drive.
  • The software also prompt you to insert a blank CD into the CDRW drive. INSERT a BLANK CD-R (CD-RW disk is not recommended for creating an exact copy) into the CDRW-drive.
  • The software will continue the process automatically.
  • After the process is done, click "OK" and eject the newly created CD.
  • If you are creating more than one CD, the software will notify you to remove the current CD and insert another BLANK CD into the CDRW drive, and go through the last three step again and again until the desired "Number of Copies" is reached.
  • With everything is done, you can close the program or go back and start duplicating another DC.

Copying Files to a CD

To copy one or more files to a CD follow the subsequent steps:

  • Click: "Start", "Programs", "Roxio Easy CD Creator 5", and "Project Selector".
  • Click: "Make a Data CD" and " Data CD Project".
  • The top part of the software works in the same way as window explorer. You can navigate through the local hard drives and network drives.
  • Insert a blank CD into your CDRW drive (the destination drive).
  • In the "Select Source Files" drop-down list box, select the folder where your files are located; a list of all files in the folder appears in the "Source" window.
  • Select the file (hold down the Ctrl or Shift key to select multiple files) in the "Source" window, and then click "Add". The file is added to the data "CD project". Keep repeating this step until you have added all the files you would like to have or the CD is full. NOTE: You can add up to 650 MB (74-minute CD) or 700 MB (80-minute CD) of files and folders to a data "CD project". The bottom part of the software window, named " Project Size", shows you how much data you will have on your CD and how much free space you still have on the CD.
  • Click "Record". The "Record CD Setup" dialog box appears.
  • Make sure that the "Copy to hard drive first" option is checked.
  • If you use a CD-R disk, click the "Options" button and make sure that "Finalize CD" option is checked; not the "Finalize Session" option. Also, you cannot record onto any used CD-R disk even if the CD is not full.
  • Click "Start Recording".
  • If you are using CDRW disk, there will be a warning. Click "OK".
  • Click "OK" at the end of a successful copying process. This will return you to the main screen of the software. You can insert new blank CD disk and create another data CD or quit the program. The software will ask you whether to save the project, click "NO".
  • NOTE 1: If you use a CD-R disk and there is any error during the recording process, that CD-R disk cannot be re-used. Discard it and insert a new (blank) CD disk to repeat the process.
  • NOTE 2: If you use a CD-RW disk, click the "Options" button and make sure that the "Finalize Session" option is checked; not the "Finalize CD" option. With this option, you can record additional files onto the CD until the CD is full. WARNING: CD-RW disks may not be compatible for use in older CD drives. For use with older CD drives we recommend the use of CD-R disks.
