Restricted Electives Offered in Fall 2007
Your goal in choosing restricted electives should be to create a cohesive set of courses focused on one or a few areas of particular interest to you. The list of courses below includes those that are on the formal list of approved restricted electives for the Politics and Policy concentration, as well as those courses that we will automatically approve as substitute restricted electives. (Approved restricted electives and approved substitutes that are not being offered in spring are not listed below). Substitution policy for restricted electives: Other courses may be acceptable as substitute restricted electives, subject to approval and provided that you can make a strong case that the course serves your purposes and educational needs. We strongly encourage you to identify additional courses in departments such as GVPT, GEOG, ECON, AGNR, AREC, PUAF, BSCI, NRSC, and NRMT that will extend and deepen knowledge gained in previous courses that were of particular interest. To be approved as a restricted elective, such a course must have a substantial link to the politics and policy of the environment, the general study of environmental problems, or social/political/historical/economic processes directly relevant to your particular environmental interests. (For example, if your particular interests were in environment and development, you might be able to make a case that a course in Latin American or African politics made sense for your program; if you were interested primarily in water policy, a course on freshwater ecosystems might make sense).
To request that a course not on our approved list be accepted as a substitute, send Dr. Conca and Rodrigo a strong and specific 1-2 paragraph explanation of how the course is relevant to your career or educational interests. (This substitution policy applies only to restricted elective requirements, not to the basic GVPT and ECON requirements of the ENSP Politics and Policy concentration).
