Like many of us, Maureen Cavaiola ’72 (sociology) says she never suspected where her education on the College Park campus might lead her. But a course, Crisis in American Institutions, was a real a defining point in her thought processes. “It was truly an eye opener to me. I realized that although we will always need institutions, they will never be able to solve all problems of society.”  It was this lesson, coupled with Maureen’s belief that everyone should be able to age with dignity, that drove her to create Partners In Care, a nonprofit organization that uses a service-exchange concept to help seniors and disabled adults remain independent in their homes.  Created in 1993, the organization’s programs are built around the concept of reciprocity—pick up groceries for a neighbor and in exchange have your yard work done. Now 2600 members strong, Partners In Care provides a network of support for seniors by engaging people in the community to help each other with the myriad tasks involved in everyday living.  Maureen’s grass roots involvement in her community, entrepreneurship of ideas, and empowerment of others was recognized by the L’Oreal Corp. in 2007 when she was honored as a Woman of Worth.  Learn more about Partners in Care and hear Maureen discuss her life’s work and passion.
