Student Expectations of Professors

In the August/September 1993 issue of Teaching Professor, John William shared his expectations of an "A" or outstanding student and a "C" or average student. Lim adopts William's analysis as a standard to evaluate faculty members. Lim raised the question of student expectations of faculty with 50 of his students. The following is a compilation of their responses that summarizes an outstanding professor:

The "A" Professor—An Outstanding Professor

Preparation
"A" professors are able to prepare well-organized, detailed syllabi and follow them. They always bring a complete set of notes to class and are prepared to lecture on the materials thoroughly and efficiently.

Enthusiasm
"A" professors are enthusiastic about teaching. They make students feel welcome when seeking help for academic or personal problems.

Clarity
"A" professors answer student questions clearly, accurately and specifically. They make homework assignments clear and to the point.

Research
"A" professors are always current with advances in their field. They are able to introduce the latest research into the classroom and always keep an eye on the latest technology and prepare their students for the future.

Assignments
"A" professors give assignments regularly to reinforce class material. Their assignments are challenging and relevant to class discussions. They always make certain that the students have the tools and knowledge to finish the assignments on time. They grade assignments promptly and make adequate comments on homework and tests.

Humor
"A" professors have a sense of humor that makes the class fun to attend. They bring to the class a level of dynamics that helps maintain the interest of the students when the material becomes dry.

Fairness
"A" professors treat all students equitably. They grade students according to their performance and efforts.
