College of Behavioral and Social Sciences
Fostering Healthy Alumni Relations

The University of Maryland is striving to strengthen its relationship with University of Maryland alumni. The benefits of a robust relationship with alumni are clear; therefore, College of Behavioral and Social Sciences faculty members are strongly encouraged to establish good relationships with current and former University of Maryland students. The following is a list of ways to do so:

1.   Alert students to employment opportunities.

2.   Provide students with comprehensive feedback on papers and exams.

3.   Accommodate students who are the victims of unfortunate circumstances.

4.   Personally commend/acknowledge excellent academic work.

5.   Respond to students in a timely manner (e.g., return phone calls, grade papers and so forth).

6.   Refer students with problems that you are unable to solve to the appropriate campus office.

7.   Invite students to extracurricular activities.

8.   Accommodate students with three or more final exams on the same day.

9.   Be available and engaging during office hours.

10. Learn and use students' names.

11. Establish an atmosphere of respect and professionalism in your class.

12. Interact with students outside the classroom (e.g., informal talks in the dorms, sorority advising and so forth).
