Retention and Graduation Principles
  1. Any student admitted to the University of Maryland is capable of earning a degree.
  2. In most circumstances, the student's best interests are served by continuing with and completing an academic degree. Any decision to the contrary is a serious matter and deserves careful attention, analysis and follow-up by the institution.
  3. The institution's best interests are served by a high rate of retention and graduation.
  4. All members of the campus community share the responsibilities inherent in the maintenance and enhancement of a supportive, challenging and productive educational environment.
  5. Each entering class, beginning with the fall 1997 class, is individually and systematically advised and tracked for the duration of the students'
    enrollment plus 12 months.
  6. The frequency and intensity of involvement of individual students in their campus experience (in and out of class) is the major determinant of success, retention and graduation. The personal attention given to individual students, including recognition for achievements, is a critical ingredient of this involvement.
