Legal Issues of Concern to Faculty Members

The following are examples of legal issues that are of concern to faculty members. The Office of Legal Affairs may assist you with further details about these topics and may have programs on some of them.

  • Academic freedom and sexual harassment;
  • Student rights and the scope of the Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act (Buckley Amendment);
  • Legal issues involving the assessment of student performance, including performance in clinical settings;
  • Evolving legal issues pertaining to the Internet and electronic communications;
  • Defining and responding to classroom disruption;
  • Legal issues involving students with disabilities, including learning disabilities;
  • Law and policy issues regarding academic integrity standards;
  • The First Amendment and religious freedom on campus, including discussion of issues related to "cult" activity.
