Learning that you have been placed
on academic probation or dismissal can be challenging. Advisors in the College
of Behavioral and Social Sciences are committed to assisting students through
this experience. Students on academic probation or dismissal should schedule an
appointment with an advisor to discuss their current academic status. During
this appointment, advisors will discuss academic strategies, goals, and options
as related to your academic status.
Academic
Probation and Dismissal Policy
Students will be placed on academic
probation if their cumulative GPA falls below 2.0. Normally, a student is
expected to attain a 2.0 cumulative GPA at the end of any probationary
semester. Students who fail to achieve a 2.0 cumulative GPA at the end of their
probationary semester may be academically dismissed, depending on their credit
level as detailed in the University of Maryland catalog.

Probation
and Dismissal Procedures
- All students who are on academic probation are assigned
to academic advisor. Your college advisor will contact you during the
first few weeks of the semester to invite you to come in for an
appointment.
- Our advisors will work with you to discuss the cause of
academic difficulty, discuss what grades you will need in the current
semester to get off probation and refer you to campus resources and
tutoring if needed.
- In addition, you will not be able to make schedule
adjustments on TESTUDO until you meet with a college advisor in our
office. The advisor will give you electronic stamps for all courses that
you would like to add or drop after your meeting.
- Be sure to schedule your advising appointment well in
advance of your registration date during the early registration period.
