Tips to having a great orientation experience!

Orientation is an exciting time, but there is also a lot to accomplish.  Follow these tips to have a successful orientation.

Be Prepared!

Bring your transcripts.  If you are currently taking courses at another institution, please bring an updated transcript with you to orientation. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable for orientation and advising purposes, but please make sure that you have an official transcript sent to the Office of the Registrar once you have completed the semester.

Bring your AP or IB test scores.   Be sure to bring an updated copy of your AP or IB scores.  The score report is acceptable for orientation and advising purposes, but you will need to have your official scores sent to the university from the College Board in order for the credit to appear on your official record.

Take the Math Placement Exam.  Learn more about the math placement exam and see sample exams.

Take the math placement exam.

Know requirements for special programs.  If you are in a living and learning program, such as College Park Scholars, Honors, Gemstone, CIVICUS or Global Communities, make sure you know the courses that you should register for as a participant in the program before meeting with your academic advisor.

Be Flexible!

Advisors will work to make sure you have the best possible schedule, but you may not get the exact schedule that you want.

Be Connected!

  • Get a business card or contact information from the college advisor that you meet with during orientation.
  • Get to know your department advisor.
  • At orientation, register for a BSOS section of UNIV 100 (freshmen) or EDCP 108G (transfers) to learn more about college life and adjustment to UMD.
  • Follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and our blog.
  • Explore the College's website.

Be Informed!

  • Look at the schedule for your University orientation.
  • Review the topics that will be covered during the college portion of your upcoming orientation:
