College Scholarships
The
college offers several scholarships to its students (see below). Each
scholarship has individual eligibility criteria. Scholarship awards are granted
one time for the Fall 2012 semester.

information and an online application are currently available. The college
currently offers the following scholarship awards (click each for more

Please thoroughly read the following
notes regarding the application process:
1.
To apply for any of the scholarships above, you must use your University
Directory ID to access the online application.
2.
New students (incoming freshmen and transfers) entering the University of
Maryland during the Fall 2011 semester may not apply; University of
Maryland, College Park grades prior to August 30, 2011 will be used in the
review process.
3.
Students who have previously been awarded a College of Behavioral and Social
Sciences scholarship may not reapply for the scholarship which they were
awarded; however, students are welcome to apply for other scholarships if
qualified.
4.
Students may apply for more than one scholarship; however, they must meet the
individual qualifications for each additional scholarship.
5.
Incomplete applications will not be reviewed or considered. This
includes parts of the application that cannot be submitted online (e.g., letter
of recommendation). If you are sending an item that is part of your application
via postal mail, you must ensure it is received by the deadline. This includes
hand deliveries.
6.
Scholarships will be awarded to students for the Fall 2012 semester. In order
to receive an award at that time students must maintain the original
scholarship qualifications; otherwise, the scholarship award will be given to
an alternative candidate.
7.
Recipients of the scholarships will be recognized on Thursday, May 3, 2012 at
the college’s awards ceremony.
The following materials must be
submitted for EACH scholarship application:
1.
Transcript (official or unofficial)
2.
Resume
3.
Letter of recommendation - At least one letter is required from someone who can
speak on behalf of your academic performance and why you are the best candidate
for a scholarship based on the qualifications set forth. The letter(s) should
be from faculty who are familiar with your academic performance. Letters of
recommendation must meet one of the following criteria:
- The letter must
be sent from a university faculty member's official umd.edu e-mail account
(if not a University of Maryland faculty member, the letter must be sent
on letterhead with a signature and in a sealed envelope to the address
listed below); or
- Be sent on
letterhead with a signature and in a sealed envelope to the address below.
4.
Essay (each scholarship has a different essay question)
5.
Statement of financial need - a brief personal statement regarding your
financial need.
6.
Financial aid offer statement - This is only required if you receive some
type of financial assistance (other scholarships, loans, grants, etc.) for
tuition. Your financial aid statement, if applicable, may be viewed by visiting
http://www.testudo.umd.edu/, clicking on "Financials" then
"Financial Aid Inquiry."

Department Scholarships
Scholarships
are sometimes given at the department level (e.g., Department of Government
& Politics). Check with your departmental advisor or your director of
undergraduate programs for more information regarding scholarship opportunities
that may be available to you.
National Scholarships
The National Scholarship Office at the University of
Maryland provides information on nationally competitive scholarships at the
