Katherine Pedro & Robert S. Beardsley Scholarship Award

Outstanding Leadership

In recognition of student leaders, Assistant Dean Dr. Katherine P. Beardsley, along with her husband, established a scholarship award that will acknowledge a behavioral and social science student who shows strength in academics, merit and leadership.

The monetary award for this scholarship is: $1,000 (one recipient).

Qualifications

Students are only eligible to apply if they meet the follow criteria:

  • Must possess 3.25 or higher cumulative grade point average (GPA)
  • Must be a full-time, degree-seeking student at the University of Maryland, College Park
  • Must be registered for a minimum of 15 credits during the Fall 2011 semester
  • Must be a declared behavioral and social science major prior to September 13, 2011
  • Must not graduate before December 2012
  • Must be in good judicial standing

Additional Qualifications and Notes

1. To apply for this scholarship, you must use your University Directory ID to access the online application.

2. New students (incoming freshmen and transfers) entering the University of Maryland during the Fall 2011 semester may not apply; University of Maryland, College Park grades prior to August 30, 2011 will be used in the review process.

3. Students who have previously been awarded a College of Behavioral and Social Sciences scholarship may not reapply for the scholarship which they were awarded; however, students are welcome to apply for other scholarships if qualified.

4. Students may apply for more than one scholarship; however, they must meet the individual qualifications for each additional scholarship.

5. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed or considered. This includes parts of the application that cannot be submitted online (e.g., letter of recommendation). If you are sending an item that is part of your application via postal mail, you must ensure it is received by the deadline. This includes hand deliveries.

6. Scholarships will be awarded to students for the Fall 2012 semester. In order to receive an award at that time students must maintain the original scholarship qualifications; otherwise, the scholarship award will be given to an alternative candidate.

7. Recipients of the scholarships will be recognized on Thursday, May 3, 2012 at the college’s awards ceremony.

The following materials must be submitted for EACH scholarship application:

1. Transcript (official or unofficial)

2. Resume

3. Letter of recommendation - At least one letter is required from someone who can speak on behalf of your academic performance and why you are the best candidate for a scholarship based on the qualifications set forth. The letter(s) should be from faculty who are familiar with your academic performance. Letters of recommendation must meet one of the following criteria:

  • The letter must be sent from a university faculty member's official umd.edu e-mail account (if not a University of Maryland faculty member, the letter must be sent on letterhead with a signature and in a sealed envelope to the address listed at the bottom of this page); or
  • Be sent on letterhead with a signature and in a sealed envelope to the address listed at the bottom of this page.

4. Essay (each scholarship has a different essay question)

5. Statement of financial need - a brief personal statement regarding your financial need.

6. Financial aid offer statement - This is only required if you receive some type of financial assistance (other scholarships, loans, grants, etc.) for tuition. Your financial aid statement, if applicable, may be viewed by visiting http://www.testudo.umd.edu/, clicking on "Financials" then "Financial Aid Inquiry."

Essay Question and Instructions

How have your leadership skills evolved since starting at the University of Maryland and how have those skills shaped you as a person? Please use specific examples.

  • Your essay should be a minimum of 500 words, but no more than 1,000 words
  • Please use a traditional 12 point font
  • Your essay should be double-spaced
