James G. Gimpel, Editor: Jim is a professor of Government at the University of Maryland, College Park, where he has been on the faculty since 1992. He received his Ph.D. in 1990 from the University of Chicago. From 1989 to 1991 he worked full time in the U.S. Senate, and then did a brief stint in the Department of Housing and Urban Development. His interests in American politics are wide ranging but have focused on political behavior, public opinion, state politics, congressional policymaking, and immigration politics and policy. His most recent books are: Patchwork Nation (University of Michigan Press 2003) with Jason E. Schuknecht, and Cultivating Democracy (Brookings Institution Press 2003) with J. Celeste Lay and Jason E. Schuknecht. Current projects include several studies in the geography of political behavior, and a forthcoming book on political socialization in rural America.
