These are resources primarily for graduate students wishing to use advanced tools for technical research. There is a learning curve for each component, but the long-term efficiency gains are well worth the investment. I suggest the following incremental approach: get comfortable with LaTeX, then R, then finally Vim or Emacs. Good news: LaTeX/R/Vim/Emacs are all open-source and free!
