Home > Question 3 > Perpetrators By Time

3. Who participated in the genocide and how does this vary across the 100 days and across the country?

Shown below are the temporal differences in perpetrator activity, by profession. One can see the gradual changes for each profession over a 5-week-period (5 weeks were used because perpetrator information is available consistently during this time frame). Click here for geographic differences.

Overall Summary: Looking across the pie charts, one is able to see that Interahamwe activity was quite high in the first week, followed by a decline in the second, third and fourth weeks. During these latter periods, Everyday Individuals and Soldiers increased their involvement. It is during the fifth week that we once again see the strong presence of the Interahamwe. The individuals who initiate the genocide thus end up being the ones that ended it as well.
