2. What explanatory factors are associated with the varying rates of participation, violence, and saving of other individuals (the Schindler-syndrome)?

Statistical Analyses

After collecting our data from the diverse sources we consulted, our project engaged in some quantitative analyses to begin to address the question of why specific locations had certain activities (e.g., many deaths or torture), while others did not. We present some of our preliminary findings below.

For these analyses, we focused upon where events took place (private locales, public locales, commercial spaces, religious spaces), how large the relevant area was (total surface area), commune size and the percentage of the population Hutu, Tutsi and Twa – as measured by the Census of 1992.

_________________________________________________________

Over the course of the next year, we will be engaging in more analyses. These will consider the influence of:

--Spatial Location

exactly where events took place
their proximity to roads as well as Kigali
the activity within surrounding areas
proximity to military bases and gendarme

--Time

exactly when events took place

--Prior Mobilization of Militias
--Agricultural Development

yield from private and collective crops
