Conclusion Our project advances a new theory of inter-ethnic relations and applies it to the case of Blacks and Jews. This research will contribute to two well established fields – social movements and Black protest - by exploring the major competing theories of contentious politics (rationalist and structuralist) and by confronting the complexity of ethnic protest within a multicultural, advanced democracy. The study will break new ground by exploring three fields that have yet to be studied rigorously - Jewish protest, Black-Jewish relations, and inter-ethnic relations in America. Our research, which we hope will be the major social scientific study of the Black-Jewish Question, will thus be of value to a very wide interdisciplinary audience of political scientists, sociologists, historians, urbanists, and students of ethnic studies. Moreover, we hope that by uncovering the basis of Black-Jewish conflict and cooperation we will contribute to a lessening of the frequent high-profile clashes that have occurred between Blacks and Jews in America as well as those that occur between other ethnic groups. Extensions of our work on inter-ethnic relations to Latinos, Italians, and other ethnic groups will be important. |
