I am an associate professor of government and politics at the University of Maryland.  I arrived here in the summer of 2004 after spending eight years on the faculty at Vanderbilt University.   I teach and do research on American politics, focusing especially on political parties, electoral behavior, public opinion, religion and politics, and quantitative research methods.

My first book, The Great Divide: Religious and Cultural Conflict in American Party Politics, examines the growing division of the Democratic and Republican parties along religious and cultural lines.  Currently, I am working primarily on articles and (eventually) books related to two research projects. One, with Tom Carsey, focuses on what we call “conflict extension”:  the growing polarization of the two major parties and their coalitions along multiple ideological dimensions.  The other, with Tom Carsey, John Green, and Rick Herrera, employs data on Republican and Democratic national convention delegates from 1972 to 2000 to examine the changing character of party activism in the United States.
