In addition to the undergraduate advising provided by
the Department of Government and Politics and the College of Behavioral and Social
Sciences, the Government and Politics Honors Program also offers a graduate school
advising workshop each fall. Information about graduate and undergraduate advising
is included below.
In addition to mandatory advising, the Government and Politics advising office
(TYD 3104) is a great place to visit for information about internships, scholarships,
study abroad programs, and career and graduate school opportunities. For more
information, including the weekly advising schedule, visit the GVPT advising
website. Professor Lee, the Director of the Government and Politics Honors
Program, provides additional advising usually on the subject of second majors,
minor concentrations, and Honors theses. The Honors listserv also regularly provides
information on scholarships and other academic opportunities.
Each fall, the Government and Politics Honors program
offers a graduate school advising workshop. Led by Professor Lee, the workshop
covers topics such as top Government and Politics graduate schools, tips for
applying, and what to expect from a graduate program.
Moreover, you don't have to wait until fall to
start researching graduate school opportunities. Here is the Government and Politics
Honors program's list of top Government and Politics graduate schools. Some programs
are stronger in certain areas than others (e.g. Syracuse University has a strong
Public Administration program but is not nearly as strong elsewhere), so use
this list as a jumping off point for further research. If you have questions
about a specific school or the application process in general, don't hesitate
to contact Professor Lee (flee {at} gvpt•umd•edu). Additionally,
the Department of Government and Politics maintains an excellent graduate
school website with information and tips about the graduate school application
process.
