Instructions for Downloading Text and Image Files

1. Create a new download directory

Downloading can get complicated. Unless you carefully name and store new files, you will soon forget where they are. To keep track of files you download, you should save them in a special folder and/or subfolder. First you will want to create a download folder that you can use repeatedly and then move your files to a permanent location. Methods for creating a new download folder or directory vary depending on whether you're running Windows or the Macintosh OS, but you can make the folder or directory once, then reuse it time and time again. If you give it a name like like Downloads, you'll always know where to find it.

To create a folder for storing your downloaded files (you can also point your Web browser's Save dialog box to this spot), do the following:

Windows 98/00/XP/NT

1. Right-click anywhere on the Windows desktop.
2. Select New/Folder from the pop-up menus.
3. A folder will appear on your desktop with its default name, New Folder, highlighted. Type the word Downloads (or whatever you want to call it) over the old name and press Enter.

Macintosh

1. In the Finder, select New Folder under the File menu.
2. An untitled folder will appear on your desktop. Type the word Downloads over the folder's current name, then click elsewhere on the desktop.
