10. Internship Opportunity in the office of Congresswoman Doris O. Matsui
Congresswoman Doris Matsui of California’s 5th district has an internship opening available in her Washington, D.C. office. The office is currently seeking students to begin in April and end in June, with the possibility of extending the internship through the summer.
This position will provide an excellent opportunity to gain an up-close perspective of the legislative process while developing a solid understanding of how a Congressional office operates. Internships are open to college and graduate-level students and are unpaid, although the office gladly assists interns who wish to petition for academic credit. Interns will gain valuable hill and office experience and have access to many unique hill opportunities.
Duties include attending Congressional committee hearings and legislative meetings, conducting tours of the Capitol, assisting with research, and drafting correspondence. In addition, administrative tasks such as mail processing, data entry, answering telephones, and assisting our legislative staff when needed will also be necessary. Responsibilities and projects are tailored to each individual’s interests and a concerted effort is made to ensure that students’ educational and professional goals are met.
Internships are available in a part or full time capacity. Candidates with California-ties will be given priority.
Please submit applications for an internship in our DC office as soon as possible. To apply, please email or fax your resume, cover letter and writing sample with ‘Spring [or Summer] Internship Applicant’ in the subject line. 11. Dean Student Advisory Council
Overview:
The Dean's Student Advisory Council (DSAC) was formed in the fall of 2002. This council is charged with the responsibility of advising the dean on various topics affecting students and their educational and social experience sat the University of Maryland. Each academic year, the group takes on the responsibility of allocating the college's portion of the approved student technology fee. DSAC was assigned the primary role of deciding where those fees would be best applied in the college. DSAC also led the charge in the formation and founding of the college's Ambassadors Program, which has proven to be a successful addition and support system for the college and advising center. Moving forward, DSAC plans on developing systems to help the college have a more community like feel, and creating better relationships with each respective department in hopes of being able to better address students' issues and concerns. During the 2007 2008 academic year, DSAC held its first student‐faculty dinner with great success—more than 150 students and faculty from the college attended the dinner. Plans are currently underway for the implementation of next year's student faculty dinner, which is slated to be an annual event for the college. This council consists of representatives from each department in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences, the living/learning programs in the college, the Student Government Association, University Senate representatives for the college, and a peer advisor.
Terms:
Each department representative is to serve a minimum of a one year term and can serve a maximum of two years with the approval of the council. The living learning programs and peer advisors shall appoint a representative for a one year term, unless the council supports additional terms in the absence of an appropriate replacement. To be eligible to act as a representative, the following criteria must be met:
• The student must have and maintain above a 2.7 cumulative GPA.•
The student must have been a declared Behavioral & Social Sciences major for at least one (1) semester; preference will be given to students going into their second or third year.•
The student may not have any judicial infractions against them.•
The student must be willing to meet twice a month on Tuesday evenings.•
The student must be willing to serve on a minimum of one college wide committee (i.e., Teaching Award Committee, Scholarship Awards Committee, and December Graduation Speaker Committee).•
The student must be able to attend the transition meeting on Tuesday, April 21 at 7:00 p.m.To Apply: http://www.bsos.umd.edu/media/26613/dsacapplication0910.pdf
