1. Federal Semester Program
Spaces are still available in the Federal Semester Program 2008–2009!
Interested in how federal policy is set in Washington? See for yourself! Become part of a small, friendly cohort of students. Take a seminar on federal policy in the fall (UNIV 348); participate in a federal internship (UNIV 349), with stipend assistance, in the spring.
In 2008–2009, the Federal Semester Program focuses on health policy. Rising juniors and seniors, of any major, interested in public policy, medicine, and public health, are welcome to apply. This program is sponsored by the Office of Undergraduate Studies and intended to add value to your major. What a fabulous educational experience! What a great item for your résumé.
The fall 2008 seminar is Federal Health Policy, with Professor Elaine Anderson (Tuesday/Thursday 11:00–12:15). In the spring, our students intern in a wide variety of places, including the FDA, NIH, HHS, and on Capitol Hill. Activities will include workshops, field trips to Capitol Hill, and conversations with leaders of health and public policy. Guidance is provided on securing and participating in federal internships.
Apply now! Rolling admissions. For details and application form, go to http://www.federalsemester.umd.edu. Contact: Dr. Joan Burton, Acting Assistant to the Dean, Office of Undergraduate Studies, and the Coordinator of Federal Semester and the Individual Studies Program. 3. GVPT Summer Courses
Do you need to catch up on requirements? Want to fulfill a requirement so you can make room for internships your junior and senior year? Are you staying in College Park for the summer? Consider taking GVPT courses in the summer. Spaces are still available in GVPT summer session II courses:
GVPT280 Comparative Politics and
Governments; (3 credits) Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD.
Prerequisite: GVPT100. An introduction to the comparative study of
politics and governance, including the analytical frameworks for studies of
politics and governmental institutions and a survey of the major types of
European regimes. This course introduces students to some of the
fundamentals of domestic-level politics in a variety of countries around the
world, and asks some of the big questions in comparative politics: what is
the state, and what is power? What are some of the major institutions that
comprise a state? What are ideologies and what is nationalism-how do ideas
matter in politics? What do we know about political transitions, and when do
they lead to democracy or authoritarianism? These are just an example of the
themes and questions explored in this stimulating and thought-provoking
course, a course that everyone interested in politics should take.
GVPT241 The Study of Political
Philosophy: Ancient and Modern; (3 credits) Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD.
