The Government and Politics Advising Office has moved to 3104C and 3104B.

 

Walk-In Hours for Fall 2007

If you would like to meet with an advisor at a time not listed as walk-in, you can email advising@gvpt.umd.edu to schedule an appointment.  Please include times you are available to meet in the request email. 

 

Reminder of the Three Important GVPT Policies

The Government and Politics Advising Office would just like to remind students of the following three major policies:

 

GVPT Course Restriction Policy

Government and Politics majors may only register for three (3) GVPT courses for fall and spring semester. All other majors are restricted from taking no more than one (1) GVPT course per semester. The advising office makes no exceptions to this policy.

 

Oversubscription Policy

In accordance with BSOS College policy, the Government and Politics department does not oversubscribe students to any GVPT course. Students are encouraged to sign up for all courses on their registration date, and must complete any other registration blocks before there registration appointment. Students should remain on waitlists and remember to check in every day during schedule adjustment to ensure they do not lose their spot on the waitlist.

 

Pre-Requisite Policy

The Government and Politics Department enforces all pre-requisites. Student must have successfully completed a pre-requisite the semester before registering for any class. The Government and Politics Department reserves the right to drop students who are missing the pre-requisite from the course without notice.


Mock Trial

Do you want to part of a National Championship Team? Join UMD's Mock Trial Team!

Interested in law? Public speaking?  Want to meet people? Then Mock Trial is for you. The 4 time National Championship team is recruiting new talent to join our mock trial program for another victorious year in tournaments around the country, traveling from New York City to California. 

Join our mock trial team and you will learn trial techniques, the rules of evidence and develop an understanding of law. It serves as a great foundation for law school and public speaking. You will also meet great people and make connections in the legal field.

Conference on Women's Labor in the Global Economy

The African American Studies Department, University of Maryland presents a book launch & two-day conference for Women's Labor in the Global Economy featuring the contributing authors: Akosua Adomako Ampofo, Lynn Bolles, Akosua Darkwah, Carole Boyce Davies, Evelyn Nakano Glenn, Nandini Gunawardena, Sharon Harley, Nancy Hewitt, Evelyn Hu-DeHart, Maria Ontiveros, Mary Osirim and Vicki Ruiz Thursday, Oct. 4, 2007 4:30-6:00pm at the Nyumburu Cultural Center and Friday, October 5, 2007 9:00-1:30 pm in the Atrium at the Stamp Student Union.

Middle East Seminar Series

“Saudi-American Relations and the Coming Challenges in the Middle East” with Gregory Gause, Associate Professor of Political Science and Director of the Middle East Studies Program at the University of Vermont, on Thursday September 20th, 2007 12:30-2 at the Center for International Development and Conflict Management (CIDCM) Conference Room  (Ground Floor of Tydings Hall).  Lunch will be provided, therefore an RSVP is required. Call To Service Workshop

Do you want to improve you or your staffs' knowledge of federal opportunities and how to promote federal service on your campus? The Live of Others Film

The University Honors Program proudly presents The Lives of Others on Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. in the Hoff Theater, Stamp Student Union. The film will be hosted by Dr. Howard Smead, Senior Lecturer in the University Honors Program. Dr. Smead will provide a brief introduction and lead a post-show discussion on the major themes presented, placing the film within a social and historical context. All are invited to attend, free popcorn and soda will be provided to enhance your cinematic experience. Included below is a brief description of the film.


NPR Needs Your Help

NPR is looking for a UM student who was an Iraq or Afghanistan veteran to talk with for a series they are working on. They are also asking how MANY vets from either war we actually have on campus. If you have any pertinent information, contact David Ottalini at dottalin@umd.edu.


Harry S. Truman Scholarship Workshop

 

Faculty members and student advisors in fields related to public service, particularly government and politics, behavioral and social sciences, education,
and the sciences, and are asked to encourage their best juniors to attend the Truman Scholarship workshop given by Prof. Joe Oppenheimer. Truman scholars receive up to $30,000 for their graduate education. The campus deadline for the Truman is November 26, 2007.

Internship Opportunities

	

Intern for New Jersey Democrat

Full-time or Part-time Intern Opportunity. Moderate Mid-Atlantic Democrat is seeking highly motivated interns to work full time during the 2007 fall semester in his Washington office.  The internship is unpaid but students may receive credit. Intern duties are primarily administrative, and include answering phones, opening and sorting mail, scheduling tours of various federal buildings, conducting tours of the Capitol building, attending hearings, and some legislative research.  This opportunity offers an exciting inside glimpse into how a congressional office operates, and familiarizes the intern with Capitol Hill.

The Judicial Branch's Administrative Office

The Administrative Office (AO), an agency of the Judicial Branch of the federal government, is committed to serving and supporting the federal court system of the United States. The AO provides a broad range of legislative, legal, financial, technology, management, administrative and program support services to the federal courts.

OPPORTUNITY: The AO is seeking applicants for the Cooperative Education Program (Co-op). The opportunity is intended to provide valuable work experience for students interested in a public service career. Applicants must be currently be enrolled or accepted for enrollment as degree-seeking students, taking at least a half-time academic or technical course load in an accredited 4 year program, and be in good academic standing. Graduate level Human Resources, Political Science and Public Administration students are preferred. The student will have an opportunity to improve his or her writing, research, analytical, logical, multi-tasking, and customer-service skills. Students are expected to work 20 hours per week during the school year and 40 hours per week (full-time) during the summer. Students will be appointed on a temporary basis with the duration to be determined based on the academic program. Upon graduation and successful completion of academic requirements, the AO may non-competitively convert a Co-op student to a permanent appointment.

SALARY:  10.84 - 26.80 (Hourly)

Rules for the GVPT Newsletter

The newsletter is sent out each Friday before 12 pm to all current University of Maryland students who have declared and been accepted into the GVPT major. Only information relevant to academic and extra-curricular opportunities for these students will be sent through the newsletter. The government advising office reserves the right to edit and review all submissions to the GVPT newsletter and deny any submissions at their sole discretion.
