Summer Courses

Planning on sticking around College Park this summer?  Why not get a few of your GVPT requirements out of the way?  The summer semesters are a great time to take GVPT courses because the class sizes are smaller and topics are unique, most summer courses are not offered during the fall or spring.  Check Testudo for a complete listing of all the courses being offered this summer in the GVPT Department.

Public Policy Internship

The Public Policy Internship Program will be offered for the Summer 2007 Session II.  The course will be taught online, enabling students to participate in internships across the country, or even around the world.  The normal requirements for the program remain (minimum of a 3.0 GPA, student must be a registered GVPT major with Junior status, and the internship must be concurrent with the course).  For an application to the program, or for more information, email advising or stop by the Advising Office.

This Week's Featured Summer Course

GVPT 475 - The Presidency and the Executive Branch
Summer Session II: July 16 - August 26
*This course will be taught online*

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Most of the time, when discussion turns to the President of the United States, it focuses on the man occupying the office at the current time. While the individual is of course important, the person sitting in the Oval Office is only one part of the Presidency. Presidents come and go, but the institution of the office remains remarkably stable over time. We will explore both the individuals who created the office and those who have taken on the office since then. We will spend time at the beginning of the semester considering the history of the President; what did the Founders have in mind when they created this office; how did the events in Philadelphia in 1787
affect the current President, and how have the ideals of the founders gone askew at the same time. While this is not a history course, we will explore some of our previous Presidents whose time in the office helped to define the Presidency that we see today. We will also consider the other event and institutions surrounding the Executive, such as the electoral process, the media, and the powers of the Executive Branch.

Check out the course's syllabus on the GVPT wesbite, http://www.bsos.umd.edu/gvpt/courses/summer2007/index.html
