Congratulations Scholarship Recipients!

Please join us in congratulating the following students who have been awarded GVPT scholarships for their outstanding academic achievements and community involvement:

Oppenheimer Awards

Jake Krimmel

Jake is a Government & Politics and Economics double major. He is the marketing chairman of the Maryland Music Business Society, where he also serves on the executive board. Jake plans to enroll in the University of Maryland School of Public Policy’s joint bachelor’s/master’s program and hopes to pursue a career in public service.

Adam Bloom

Adam Bloom is a sophomore Government and Politics Major with a minor in Spanish Language. Additionally, he is a member of the College Park Scholars International Studies Program and Beyond the Classroom, a program committed to civic engagement. Adam serves on the executive board of the Intelligence Community Club, a student organization dedicated to the pursuit of careers in the intelligence field. He is a research associate at the Council on Hemispheric Affairs, a think-tank in Washington D.C. After his undergraduate studies, he plans to pursue a career in Foreign Relations and eventually enroll in Law School.

Samantha Aster

Samantha Aster is a sophomore, majoring in Government and Politics. She is a public leadership scholar and a research assistant for Dr. Wayne McIntosh who is the Director of Undergraduate Studies for the Department of Government and Politics. She is also a student ambassador for the Scholars Program, as well as a sister of the Delta Phi Epsilon Sorority. Upon graduation, Samantha plans to attend law school, focusing on constitutional law. She hopes to one day to work for the United States government.

Roby Awards

Kelly Gough

Following graduation, her hope is to work in monitoring ethnic conflict and ethnic minority groups in an international setting. Her travels to South Africa, Peru, and Europe have opened her eyes to the oppression and poverty faced by minority groups even in a democratic setting. These travels, including both studying abroad and missions work, have broadened her international scope and demonstrated the constant struggle others still face internationally. She would like to work in Latin America, enabling her to utilize the skills attained by studying Spanish. Kelly is also a member of the national honor fraternity Phi Sigma Pi.

Rebecca Bakre

Rebecca is a junior Government & Politics major and Philosophy Minor. She is the officer of Public Relations and Networking on the Executive Board for the African Student Association here at the University. She also volunteers at Children's National Medical Center in Washington D.C., playing and working with inpatients and outpatients as they transition throughout whatever medical procedures and/or processes they are going through. She is one of several supervisors of Weight/Fitness Staff at the Eppley Recreation Center, and also works as a Student Representative in the Office of the Bursar here on campus. Upon obtaining her undergraduate degree, she plans to attend law school with the hopes of someday becoming a judge.

Brian M. Gardener Award

Michael Marcoux

Michael is a junior studying government and politics with hopes of later concentrating in international relations. His interest in international relations developed during his stay abroad in Norway, where he managed a committee at University of Oslo which helped students from over 100 different countries to apply the Norwegian they were learning in the classroom in real world environments. The realization of his linguistic talent, as a fluent speaker of Norwegian, has also helped him to pursue Russian as a third language at UMD. With these combined degrees, he hopes to graduate and pursue a Master’s degree at University of Maryland and subsequently, a career as a Foreign Service officer for the State Department.

Vaughn Award

Shristi Singh

Shristi is a junior Government & Politics major and a Philosophy minor. She has been a mentor and team leader for America Reads, America Counts and currently serves as an office assistant for the program. She also serves as the Director of Continuous Open Bidding for Delta Gamma Fraternity. She plans to work with the State Department starting next year as a senior and continue to work there for a year after graduation. After that, she will be attending University of Maryland, School of Law or American University Washington College of Law to pursue a J.D. in Environmental Law or International Law.

Filip Brymora

Filip is a junior Government and Politics major. His main leadership positions on campus are as Founder and President of The Polish Cultural Club and Vice President of Event Coordination of College Park Law Society.Since he began attending school he’s kept at least one part time job. He currently works for Huntington Learning Center in Bethesda where he teaches students from 1st to 12th grade. He is the only person at the company who was hired prior to getting his Bachelor's degree. He came to Maryland with a set goal in mind - to go to a top ten law school after graduation. He wants to move to Chicago and attend either Northwestern University or the University of Chicago. He wants to study and eventually practice criminal law in Chicago.
