Earn ASHA and AAA CEUs in the comfort of your own home in your own time, at your own pace, and, moreover, at a price well below that of conferences and many other journal CE programs!

Self-study programs are available using three journals:

  • Seminars in Speech and Language (Thieme)
  • Seminars in Hearing (Thieme)
  • The Journal of Fluency Disorders (Elsevier)

To obtain CEUs through the self-study program, you must do the following:

(1) Obtain the journal issue(s) you wish to read. You are not required to subscribe to these journals to participate in the CEU program, although you must obtain access to the journal issues. We do not provide copies of the journals. The journals may be available through a local or university library. Electronic subscriptions for Thieme journals are also available for individuals and libraries.

(2) Complete the questions at the end of each issue and fax or send them to the Department of Hearing & Speech Sciences. (see mail/fax information below)

(3) Include the CEU handling charge with your submission. The handling charge covers issues from the same volume. Current rates are as follows:

  • Journal of Fluency Disorders: $60 for 1-4 issues
  • Seminars in Speech and Language: $40 for 1-2 issues, $60 for 3-4 issues
  • Seminars in Hearing: $60 for 1-4 issues reported to either ASHA or AAA; $80 for 1-4 issues reported to both ASHA and AAA
Processing of your CEU questions and fees can be by mail/check or fax/credit card for your convenience. Our department staff will then grade your answers and process your CEUs.

NOTICE ON PROCESSING TIME FOR CEU MATERIALS: Our goal for processing all submissions is 24 hours. HOWEVER, please be advised that we are located on a University Campus, and that state-mandated holidays and breaks may make it difficult to accomplish all submissions within 24 hours, especially around the time of December and March breaks, when our staff is reduced. In addition, growing numbers of CE applicants attempt to submit materials only days (sometimes hours!) before their license renewals are due. Please be advised that we CANNOT GUARANTEE that materials will be marked, and certificates delivered, if they arrive to us LESS THAN SEVEN DAYS before your filing deadline. If you have a licensure deadline or other emergency, YOU MUST notify us ahead of time.

+ How soon will I get my CE results?

We mark each test as it arrives, and notify you immediately by e-mail (preferable, if you have supplied one) or by surface mail, along with a certificate indicating successful completion of the activity.

NOTICE ON PROCESSING TIME FOR CEU MATERIALS
:
Our goal for processing all submissions is 24 hours.

+ What is the criterion for passing?

You must answer 80% of the questions correctly to pass the journal activity. If you do not answer enough questions correctly, we will notify you immediately and give you additional opportunities to answer the questions that you missed. Please note: We do not write the questions; they are submitted by journal authors (in other words, please don’t kill the messenger if you need to retake questions). If you have concerns about the nature of questions or answers that are considered correct, please let us know, and we will pass this information on to the journal editors.

+ When is my activity considered complete?

You will receive a dated certificate (delivered as e-mail attachment or by surface mail), indicating the specific date that we marked your CEU forms. This date is the one you may use in reporting to state and local agencies when reporting your annual CEU activities.

+ When are my results reported to ASHA (and AAA for Seminars in Hearing)?

If you are a member of the ASHA or AAA registry, we will send your CE reports to these organizations on a quarterly basis. CE activities are currently reported to the registry on March 15, May 15, September 15, and December 15th.

+ Why are scores reported quarterly?

CE registries such as ASHA’s typically require that a continuously ongoing activity, such as journal-based CE, file on a few selected dates each year, rather than continuously. While we send YOU continuous and immediate confirmation of your activities to use in state and local reporting, your results may take a few months to show up on the ASHA registry. Your CEs are considered earned when we notify you, not when they are later posted to the registry. That is why we send you an individual confirmatory certificate right after you complete each issue.

+ Please remember to give us your ASHA or AAA number!

The CE registries that we report to, ASHA and AAA, require some way to identify you. For ASHA, we need either your ASHA number or your social security number. For AAA, we need your AAA number. This is to ensure that there are no mix-ups or delays in getting your activity posted accurately to the registries.

+ Please explain the costs of the journal activity:

The CEU handling charge is paid once per journal volume and applies to any of the journals that we administer (currently, Seminars in Hearing, Seminars in Speech and Language, and Journal of Fluency Disorders). This means you pay this charge once to complete the activities in any particular volume, regardless of the calendar year that the activity is completed in. For example, you may pay $60 for participating in the 2005 quarterly issues of the Journal of Fluency Disorders. For this price, you may complete all four issues, for 5.0 CEUs, or only a portion of them. Unfortunately, if you do not complete all four issues, we do not refund a portion of your registration fee. Also, you may not mix journal years. If you do activities from both the 2005 and 2006 volumes of a journal, for example, you must submit two separate registration forms and fees. Charges cover our paperwork in getting the issue approved for CE credit, processing your test questions, issuing you a certificate of completion and sending your paperwork to appropriate registries.

Our processing charges are much lower than those of most other journals for the numbers of CEUs you may obtain and are a tremendous savings over onsite conferences and workshops. However, processing and registry reporting of journal CEUs is very paper intensive and does require us to charge you appropriately.

+ Can I still receive credit for issues from the previous years?

YES. Each journal issue is approved for three years of CE activity. For example, all 2004 issues of our journals are available for CE study until 2006. However, when you complete a 2004 issue in 2005, your CE completion date will show as 2005, the date you completed the activity, not the date of the issue.

+ Can I still receive credit for prior issues in the volume I am reading?

YES. You may register and pay the annual charge at any point (even in December!), and then complete any of the journal year issues, in any order.

+ Who should I contact with further questions?

There are a number of ways to contact us if you have a question about your CE activities. The best and fastest way tends to be e-mail, which we monitor virtually 24/7, regardless of University schedules. You may contact Nan Ratner (nratner@hesp.umd.edu) if you have questions or wish to inquire about the status of submitted activities. You may also fax us at 301-314-2023, or call at 301-405-7361 and leave a voice mail. To facilitate us, please be sure to indicate your full name, the Journal you are self-studying, the issue number you are inquiring about, and the nature of your question. We will return your query promptly.
