Undergraduate Awards:

  • HESP undergraduate Jodi Rokuson (B.A., 2009) was chosen as a 2008-2009 Philip Merrill Presidential Scholar. The Phillip Merrill Presidential Scholars Program recognizes academic excellence and the important role that teachers/faculty have as mentors. Jodi named Dr. Sandra Gordon-Salant as the faculty mentor who has made the most impact on her academic achievement. Both attended a special workshop and luncheon on November 14, 2008 hosted by Dr. C.D. Mote, President of UMCP, and the Merrill Family, to honor the Presidential Scholars and their mentors. Congratulations to Jodi and to Dr. Gordon-Salant.

  • Congratulations to the HESP graduating seniors named Dean's Academic Scholars for the 2007-2008 year who were recognized at the BSOS awards ceremony on May 8, 2008: Robyn Amendola, Shannon Auxier, Allison Birks, Emma Collins, Leah Eiserike, Elizabeth Ashley Garey, Victoria Koulakjian, Lauren Shylit, Megan Wasilewski, Rachel Weitzner, and Danielle Zion.

  • Congratulations to the HESP graduating seniors elected into Phi Beta Kappa in the Spring 2008 semester: Shannon Auxier, Emma Collins, and Andrea Esteban.

  • At the annual University Awards Dinner, undergraduate Shannon Auxier (B.A., 2008) was recognized twice: She was awarded the Col. J. Logan Shutz Omicron Delta Kappa Leader of the Year award, as well as a member of the Maryland Medallion Society and Byrd/Elkins Award Finalist. Congratulations to Shannon on these accomplishments.
  • Lisa Pyun received an Undergraduate Research Fellowship sponsored by the Howard Hughes Medical Insitute in 2008 for her honors project titled "Single word processing in bilinguals: a neuroimaging investigation". The highly competitive HHMI fellowships are provided to support innovative undergraduate projects in the biological sciences in select American Universities. Lisa's project, mentored by Dr. Faroqi-Shah, will use magnetoencephalography to examine word processing in Spanish-English bilinguals.
  • Congratulations to Shannon Auxier (B.A., 2008), President of the 2007-2008 HESP NSSLHA chapter, for being selected to receive The Spirit of Maryland Award. The Spirit of Maryland Award is presented annually in lieu of a traditional Homecoming King or Queen honoree. The Award is presented to a male and female member of the senior class who through their achievements has most exemplified the "spirit" of the University of Maryland. Criteria for the award include outstanding scholarship, leadership, campus involvement, community service, and communication skills. The award was presented at the halftime of the Homecoming football game on October 20, 2007.Congratulations also goes to Rachel Caruso (B.A., 2008) for being one of the finalists for the Spirit of Maryland Award.
