Welcome to the Department of Hearing & Speech Sciences at the University of Maryland! |

The Doctoral
Program in Clinical Audiology is an academically-based, clinically-oriented program designed primarily to prepare professional Audiologists. This doctoral program has two tracks: one track leads to the Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) degree and one track is a dual degree program that leads to both the Doctor of Audiology and the Doctor of Philosophy (Au.D./Ph.D.) degrees. The Au.D. track entails a comprehensive educational program with a focus on clinical practicum and coursework that trains individuals to become professional audiologists; the dual degree (Au.D./Ph.D.) track provides similar clinical training and coursework, in addition to more extensive research training, to students interested in pursuing a Ph.D. degree. Students who are interested in a traditional research Ph.D., without any clinical practicum training, should apply directly for admission to the Ph.D. program in Hearing and Speech Sciences (see below).
The
Ph.D.
Program in Hearing & Speech Sciences (pdf) involves extensive
research experience as well as coursework to train students
interested in careers in independent research or academia.
The amount of course work to be completed depends on the amount of previous coursework in the Hearing & Speech
Sciences. We have strong links with a
number of other departments and programs, including Language Science at
Maryland, Neuroscience & Cognitive Science, and the Center for the
Evolutionary Biology of Hearing.
Students who are interested in the dual Au.D./Ph.D. degree program in Clinical Audiology should apply directly for admission to the Doctoral program in Clinical Audiology (see above).
For students interested in pursuing both a Ph.D. in speech or language
sciences and clinical training, our department offers options for a Combined Program for M.A. and Ph.D. in Speech-Language Pathology.
The University of Maryland graduate programs in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology are accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA). Public comment can be addressed to the Council at the link above or by mail at 10801 Rockville Pike, Rockville, MD 20852.

Research Training:
The
University of Maryland is the flagship institution of the
University System of Maryland, providing our students
with many opportunities to become involved in research.
Master's students in speech have the option
of pursuing a thesis track, in which they conduct
their own research study as part of their coursework. Au.D. students are expected to perform an original research project as their Capstone Research project, generally of a clinically-oriented nature. Our Ph.D. program is designed to train individuals
who wish to work in academic and research settings
and involves extensive research training. This includes
both directed and independent research, conducted
under the supervision of a faculty advisor. To find out more about research projects in
our department, CLICK HERE.

Open Houses
The
best way to find out more about our program is to visit!
We have open houses
once a month where prospective students can learn about
our graduate programs in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology,
tour our facilities, and meet our faculty and students.
