Welcome to the Department of Hearing & Speech Sciences at the University of Maryland!
Side of Lefrak

The Master's Program in Speech-Language Pathology (pdf) is an academically-based, clinically-oriented, full-time program designed primarily to prepare professional Speech-Language Pathologists.

The Doctoral Program in Clinical Audiology is an academically-based, clinically-oriented program designed primarily to prepare professional Audiologists. This doctoral program comprises two tracks: one track leads to the Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) degree and one track leads to the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree. The Au.D. track entails a comprehensive educational program with a focus on clinical practicum and coursework that trains individuals to become professional audiologists; the Ph.D. track provides similar clinical training and coursework, in addition to more extensive research training, to students interested in pursuing a Ph.D. degree. Students who are interested in a traditional research Ph.D., without any clinical practicum training, should apply directly for admission to the Ph.D. program in Hearing and Speech Sciences (see below).

The Ph.D. Program in Hearing & Speech Sciences (pdf) involves extensive research experience as well as coursework to train students interested in careers in independent research or academia.  The amount of course work to be completed depends on the amount of previous coursework in the Hearing & Speech Sciences. Students who are interested in a Ph.D. degree in Audiology with a clinical practicum should apply directly for admission to the Doctoral program in Clinical Audiology (see above).

The University of Maryland graduate programs in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology are accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA). Public comment can be addressed to the Council at the link above or by mail at 10801 Rockville Pike, Rockville, MD 20852.

Clinical Training:

The Department's state-of-the-art academic and clinical facilities are located in the heart of the main campus. We have a full-service clinic, an in-house preschool, and a wide range of clinical outside placements, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Walter Reed Army Medial Center, and the Kennedy-Krieger School. In addition, our close proximity to the national office of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association provides our students with a range of additional clinical opportunities.  Research Training:

The University of Maryland is the flagship institution of the University System of Maryland, providing our students with many opportunities to become involved in research.  Master's students in speech have the option of pursuing a thesis track, in which they conduct their own research study as part of their coursework.  Au.D. students are expected to perform an original research project as their dissertation research, generally of a clinically-oriented nature.  Our Ph.D. program is designed to train individuals who wish to work in academic and research settings and involves extensive research training. This includes both directed and independent research, conducted under the supervision of a faculty advisor.  To find out more about research projects in our department, CLICK HERE.
