Research/Clinical Interests
Acoustic Phonetics
Second-language phonetic acquisition and rephonologization
Neurolinguistics
I am especially interested in the effects of duration-based phonemic contrasts. Specific languages of interest incluse Finnish, Swedish, English and Arabic.
I would also like to investigate the cross-linguistic effects of limitations and strengths of CI (cochlear implant) hearing, especially with regard to duration-based phonemic contrasts.

Research/Clinical Activities
I am a graduate clinician in the University of Maryland's audiology clinic.
At the Center for Advanced Study of Language, I am investigating the acquisition of tone languages. Languages of interest include Mandarin, Vietnamese (Hanoi and Saigon), Thai and Cantonese.
As a member of Sandra Gordon-Salant's lab, I am investigating the perception of accented speech by elderly listeners. Specifically, we will look at duration-based phonemic contrasts masked by accents.
With William Idsardi, I hope to explore and publicize a recent investigation of the link between music and meter in poetry, especially with regard to trochaic inversion.
William Idsardi , David Poeppel and I plan to investigate the possible neural localization of categorical perception. We hope to draw distinctions between phonemic perception and non-phonemic categorical perception.
I was born and raised in New Jersey and still have most of my family in the Philadelphia area.
In addition to my work in academia, I am also an amateur musician, having independently released an album of original compositions for solo guitar and piano in the summer of 2005. The website dedicated to my music is located at www.mattwinn.com .
When free from the school and the studio, I play ice hockey in Laurel, MD at the Gardens ice house.
