Week 1 Review Sheet Answers:

1. Distinguish between linguistics and psycholinguistics.

Psycholinguistics is the study of how individuals comprehend (how we perceive and understand speech and written language), produce (how we construct an utterance from idea to completed sentence), and acquire language (how children acquire language). Linguistics studies the origin, structure and use of language.

2. Define what a morpheme is and distinguish between a free morpheme and bound morpheme.

A morpheme is the smallest unit of language which has meaning.
Free = stand alone e.g apple
Bound (grammatical) = can't stand alone e.g plural markings, past tense formation

3. What are some methodologies we use to study psycholinguistics?

This is straight out of the lecture notes.

4. What does modularity of language refer to?

It refers to the degree of independence of the language processing system.

5. What proof do we have that phrase-structures appear to be psychological?

When we make speech errors we tend to get slips of the tongue within a phrase and not across phrases. Also, we tend to put pauses between major sentence constituents than within them.
