Department of Psychology Adopted Two Families for Christmas
5 January, 2012
For the fifth consecutive year, members of the Department of
Psychology have adopted families for Christmas – providing much needed support
to those in need during the holiday season.
For the past two years, based largely on the overwhelming generosity of
its faculty, staff and students, Psychology has adopted two families. This
year, the Department of Psychology collected over $1,500 in cash and gift cards
in addition to a selection of gifts for their adopted families.
The families were chosen in cooperation with the Prince
Georges County Department of Human Services, based on their immediate need for
support.
The first of the two families consists of a mother, a grandmother,
and three children ranging from a newborn to a 16 year old. The family had
mostly requested clothes and gift cards they could use for food and other needed
items. The collected funds were able to purchase those items, as well as toys
for the children. The second family that Psychology adopted, which consists of
a single mother and her two daughters (ages 1 and 2 years old), also asked for
clothes. The donated money was used to purchase the needed clothes, in addition
to some basic supplies, toys and gift cards.
The Department of Psychology’s chair, Dr. Thomas Wallsten is
extremely proud of the group’s accomplishment. “It is truly gratifying to be
associated with a department whose members are as generous as [they] all are,”
Wallsten stated. “And a special thanks to Carol Gorham, the Assistant Director
of Graduate Studies, for spearheading this annual effort.”
The College of Behavioral and Social Sciences applauds Dr.Wallsten, Carol and the entire Department of Psychology for their commitment, collective selflessness, and their service to the local community.
