The
Program on Global Security and Disarmament (PGSD) is based in
the Department of Government
and Politics at the University
of Maryland.
PGSD
is an integrated program of research, analysis, international
networking, training and public education. The program focuses on
increasing awareness of security and disarmament issues, both in the academic
community and the general public.

On 13 November 2002, UN Secretary-General Kofi
Annan delivered the Anwar Sadat Lecture for Peace at the
University of Maryland. We are delighted that the
Secretary-General chose to single out our program for special
comment in his speech, saying,
And let
me also thank you for the work of your Program on Global Security
and Disarmament, which over the past two years has been
cooperating very effectively with the United Nations Expert Group
on Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Education. We need such
education more than ever today, at a time when the dangers posed
by weapons of mass destruction are on all our minds.
