The Program on Global Security and Disarmament (PGSD) is based in the Department of Government and Politics at the University of Maryland.

PGSD is an integrated program of research, analysis, international networking, training and public education. The program focuses on increasing awareness of security and disarmament issues, both in the academic community and the general public.

On 13 November 2002, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan delivered the Anwar Sadat Lecture for Peace at the University of Maryland. We are delighted that the Secretary-General chose to single out our program for special comment in his speech, saying,

And let me also thank you for the work of your Program on Global Security and Disarmament, which over the past two years has been cooperating very effectively with the United Nations Expert Group on Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Education. We need such education more than ever today, at a time when the dangers posed by weapons of mass destruction are on all our minds.

We are pleased and honored by the Secretary-General's remarks. Click here for the direct link to the UN website.
