Get Involved: Fellows/Visiting Scholars

The Program On Global Security and Disarmament welcomes visiting scholars pursuing research on security and disarmament issues. The location of the Program allows scholars to exploit the intellectual community of Washington, DC, as well as the academic setting of the University of Maryland. The staff at PGSD is constructing a global network on security and disarmament issues, and has extensive and broad-ranging research experience. Program staff are also developing strong partnerships with universities worldwide to create courses and programs on general disarmament.

Each fellow at arrival is provided with:

  • a furnished office available every day around the clock
  • a computer with email and Internet access

The following equipment and services are available for fellows' use:

  • centralized printer
  • copier
  • conference room
  • library privileges-including open access to a consortium of ten university libraries in the DC area and free services from libraries worldwide
  • the opportunity to work with an international staff engaged in research and analysis of critical policy issues

We do not currently have funds to provide stipends for visiting scholars, yet under some special circumstances PGSD funds some travel expenses and in-house administrative expenses. We have served as the host institution for Fulbright fellows, and individuals funded by international universities and institutions.

Visiting scholars at PGSD have come from around the world. Recent scholars have included:

  • a Japanese professor working on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation
  • an Indian diplomatic historian working on arms control and South Asian security
  • a Japanese journalist examining U.S. security policy toward Asia.
  • an Israeli political scientist working on secrecy issues

To apply, please send a cover letter, curriculum vitae or resume; and description of your research topic (no more than 10 pages) to:
