The
Program on Global Security and Disarmament offers a course on
disarmament, GVPT409E, "Seminar in International Relations and World
Politics: Issues in General Disarmament." First offered in Spring 2000,
the course
focuses on assessing the prospects for and obstacles to general disarmament
after the Cold War. We are continuing to offer the course
in Spring 2002, and hope to offer an additional course in future fall
semesters alongside the spring course.
Students in this course study historical efforts at general
and complete disarmament. Students analyze historical general disarmament
proposals along with recent nuclear and conventional disarmament proposals
in five main dimensions: political, military, economic, social, and
environmental. Students also work in teams to develop case studies of
countries such as Israel, South Africa, China, Peru, and India. These
case studies help highlight successes and failures in arms control and disarmament
efforts.
